9 Email Mistakes That Could Cost You the Job Offer
9 Email Mistakes That Could Cost You the Job Offer9 Email Mistakes That Could Cost You the Job Offer When youre job hunting, youre on high alert for every mistake you can possibly make you run your resume by every friend you have, carefully craft a cover letter , scrutinize every detail you put into the job application and spend hours preparing for your interview. But did you ever stop to think that you could make it all the way to a final interview only to lose the job offer to something as small as an emaille?Jennie Ellis, founder and CEO of Recruiting Bandwidth , wants job hunters to understand that every interaction they have with a prospective employer reflects on them, and that goes for the highly visible parts of a job hunt (like a resume, cover letter, application, and interview) and the behind-the-scenes communication that goes on in an email inbox. If you want to make aya youre presenting yourself professionally at all times, make sure youre leid making thes e nine common email mistakesThe way you communicate should express respect, and that starts with being accurate and honest. Make sure youre using email subjects that convey exactly what you mean, not clickbait email headlines that encourage the reader to open but leave them disappointed in the content.I dont appreciate an intrusive, alarmist approach, explains Ellis. For example, in email subject stating someone has an urgent need to speak to me, but when I open it, its just a solicitation for a job. Simply be transparent - include the position title in the subject, or if you were referred by someone who knows the recipient, state that.In the Internet age, addressing an email To whom it may concern or an incorrect name often shows a lack of initiative - more often than not, that information is available online. Furthermore, out-of-touch salutations can be a clue for recruiters and hiring managers that you may not fit in with the culture .For example, some women dont typically lik e being addressed as Ms. or Mrs. in email, says Ellis. If someone did this to me I would think they were old school and did not get our informal tech culture. One danger of communicating with prospective employers by email is that you have plenty of time to linger on your draft until it expands into a mini-treatise on why you should be hired . Skip the long correspondence and try to keep your emails to 3-5 sentences or less.Long, rambling emails when I didnt ask for one in the first place assumes that I have nothing better to do than listen to a candidate go on about themselves, explains Ellis. Instead, think about what is the most important thing you need to convey and be clear and concise about it.You dont want to treat an email like a 10-page term paper, but you also dont want to treat it like a text to your best friend. No matter how informal a company culture, youll always need to write with full words, full sentences and good grammar and spelling.I cannot stand it when people use text acronyms in email messages in something that should be as formal as a cover letter, says Ellis. It shows an immaturity and disrespect for a job seeker to be that informal to someone they dont know.Using email to build a strong relationship with a recruiter or hiring manager is not the same thing as assuming you have a personal relationship right from the start. Strive to keep your tone warm, but not too intimate.Avoid anything that sounds too personal, says Ellis. Even Very best regards could be construed as too personal. After all, why would someone give me their very best regards if they dont even know me? For all they know, I could be a total jerk, so that feels inauthentic.Recruiters get it - you may be a very busy, in-demand candidate trying to coordinate interviews and follow-up materials with several companies at a time. But thats no excuse to send everyone the same content.Sending vague emails that are clearly part of a massive blind copy blast is a big mistake , says Ellis. Many recruiters are screening your emails to see if you pay attention to details, and getting obviously copy-and-paste responses without any personal details is a big red flag .Theres a time and place for experimenting with the way you work, but its not in the way you communicate with a recruiter or hiring manager . The only thing that should stand out about you in the interview process is the quality and efficiency of your work.Recruiters read email for the content, not for the creative expression through color and format, explains Ellis. Style choices like offbeat formatting and colored or oddly large font does not give off the most professional vibe, and smiley faces and lack of paragraph breaks just send a confusing message.Your email address should be some combination of your first name, initials and last name. Anything else should be reserved exclusively for personal use.Using an inappropriate personal email address to apply for jobs is really unprofessional an d it may affect whether or not the hiring manager takes you seriously, says Ellis. For example, I once had an email from stoner54 come through the ATS once, and I thought it was a jokeIn a competitive job market, theres a lot of pressure to express your interest in a position. Unfortunately, this can lead a lot of candidates to be more aggressive than they should be, which runs the risk of turning off the hiring manager. Youre better off directing your energy to following directions for applying for a job and carefully reading all of the instructions you receive throughout the interview process - and nothing more. Emailing too often in the course of an interview process - especially if youve been told to expect a reply in a couple of days - can be very frustrating for a recruiter, says Ellis. Likewise, not responding in a timely manner to an email that necessitates a response from the potential employer can take you out of the running for a job.

Want a Readable Resume Summary Opt for a Bullet List
Want a Readable Resume Summary Opt for a Bullet ListResume Summary Option Use BulletsWant a Readable Resume Summary Opt for a Bullet ListWriting can be a difficult task. Take it from someone who has been doing it professionally for most of his career. When youre writing your resume, trying to summarize what you have to offer an employer can be more than difficult. But the Summary section of your resume, a paragraph that goes right below your name and contact information and addresses your top qualifications for the job, is where most hiring managers decide whether to read the rest of the resume. If you have a hard time assembling a strong, coherent paragraph for a Summary, heres a tip Forget the paragraph and use bullet points.Since a bullet list is usually easier to read than a dense block of text, a time-pressed hiring manager will probably appreciate it.For example, lets say youre a customer service manager looking for a similar position. Heres a summary in paragraph formSUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONSExperienced, award-winning customer service manager and leader with track record of success over the belastung 10 years in retail and online environments. Strong skills in analyzing and solving problems led to 25% jump in customer satisfaction over one year in current role, which helped boost market share 5%. Clear communication of changes in product and service offerings to associates resulted in 10% sales increase in a highly competitive year. Strong advocate of training and professional development programs for new and experienced customer service associates. Now lets break that up into bulletsSUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONSExperienced customer service manager and leader with 10-year record of success.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills led to 25% jump in customer satisfaction and 5% boost in market share over one year.Clear communication to associates of changes in product and service offerings resulted in 10% sales increase in a highly competitive year.Received company and industry leadership awards for developing successful training program for new customer service associates. The bullet-form summary is not only a bit shorter than the paragraph form, it gives the reader a break by showcasing your value in easily digestible bite-sized pieces. Meanwhile, the last bullet point reveals something more specific about your success in developing training programs compared with the last sentence in the paragraph. In todays tougher-than-tough job market, you need to be able to market yourself to land a job interview, and eventually, a job offer. If you have delivered strong, tangible results for your current and previous employers that can help you land the job, you may be comfortable in writing a paragraph for your Summary, but consider using bullets. Remember Writing is one thing, getting someone to read your writing is another.

How One Job Seekers Secret to Success Can Be Yours, Too
How One Job Seekers Secret to Success Can Be Yours, TooHow One Job Seekers Secret to Success Can Be Yours, TooThe rise of applicant tracking systems (ATS), the recruiting software used by 90 percent of businesses to filter and rankresumes, may be helping employers- but it isnt necessarily helping job seekers. The idea behind applicant tracking systems is to help hiring managers select the best applicants from the applicant pool by highlighting the best resumes- and even outright eliminating others. One way anATS works is by findingresume keywords (specific details related to a job, such as required degrees and technical knowledge) and using that information to gauge which candidates are most qualified.Mostjob seekers are unaware of applicant tracking systems. This can sometimes lead to qualified applicants being rejected, because their resumes arent written with an ATS in mind.As a result, online resume tools such as Jobscanhave emerged to help job seekers understand how to determine which resume keywords are important, and how to optimize their resumes for an ATS.Dwight GartmonDwight Gartmon, 31, a freelance music composer for film and TV moved with his family- his wife and three young boys- from California to Arizona six months ago. Moving isnt cheap, so though he had been doingfreelance work for mora than 15 years, his savings account welches dwindling. He had more than a decade of solid customer service experience on his resume, and though he enjoyed the field, he wasnt particularly excited about a tedious and grueling job search. After applying to more than 50 jobs and not receiving enough positive responses or interview opportunities from employers, Gartmon started to read blogs about resumes in search of things he could do to improve his chances. He noticed people mentioning and highly recommending Jobscan, and decided to give it a shot.He said he found Jobscans online resume tool, which directly compares a job seekers resume to a specific job and rates ho w well they match, to be extremely user-friendly and self-explanatory.To use Jobscan, all you need to do ispaste your resume and target job postinginto the appropriate sections on the Jobscan website, click Scan, and receive a Match Rate. Jobscan recommends aiming fora Match Rate of at least 80 percent.A Jobscan screen capture showing a Match Rate and Skills Comparison. Not only is Jobscan able to predict how successful a resume will be when submitted to an ATS, it highlights which aspects of a resume are working, and which arent.Which skills and keywords are already includedWhich skills and keywords should be emphasized or prioritizedWhich skills and keywords are missingJobscan makes it easy to see where your resume might be lacking.Jobscan provided me with the best advice I couldve received on how to properly tailor my resume for job applications, Gartmon said. After taking Jobscans recommendations into account and creating tailored resumes for each application, Gartmon immediately l anded two job interviews from two different companies. In both cases, he received the replies less than a week after applying. He had actually applied to one of those companies numerous times before using Jobscan, and had no luck. After using Jobscan and landing an interview, Gartmon washired by that company. He still continues to hear from companies wishing to set up interviews with him and has recommended Jobscan to all his friends and family. Not only did I save money and time using Jobscan, I gained pride on how I was being reflected in my resumes, Gartmon said. When asked what advantages he feels Jobscan provides to its users, Gartmon replied Jobscanis the advantage
